We flew back to San Francisco to volunteer at Ryan's Ride. It was an amazing event. Michele, John and their helpers' heavy promotion of the event attracted more than 400 kids. You wonder how the kids can ride their bikes without crashing into each other. The older kids were able to ride on the same route as the professional racers. Kids were screaming...I won, Iwon. All the kids were winners and were awarded a ribbon and ice cream cone.
Most rewarding was watching all the families enjoy a day out together -- despite waiting for a long time in the Summer heat.
It's more than a fashion items for our family. John is part of the Wear Yellow LiveStrong campaign. This is his quote:
I wear Yellow because...
I'm a survivor, and a survivor in many ways. I'm not just a cancer survior, but a survivor of life and a survivor of the challenges that we all face. This band reminds me to live up to those challenges , and be the most I can be.
Ryan Phua Memorial Kids' Ride is a project created in honor and in celebration of Ryan, my 2 1/2 year old nephew who died in his sleep in 2003. John, his father, is a cancer survivor and has been active in the Lance Armstrong Foundation since 1997 (He is on first name basis with Lance). This project, in conjunction with the Lance Armstrong Foundation, is a sporting event for kids under 12 and will raise money for the San Francisco Bay Area community to support cancer-related programs.
